According to legend story, the temple-bridge is considered as a sword that pierced the back of the monster Namazu, preventing it from wagging its tail, causing earthquakes. The Japanese built bridges with statues of Gods Dog and Monkey with the purpose of keeping monsters away. According to the Totem beliefs of the Japanese, dogs and monkeys are sacred animals that can miraculously control the sea monsters that have caused natural disasters in Japan and the region.
